Dharmendra Deol, popularly known simply as Dharmendra, was born into a modest Jatt Sikh family. His father, Kewal Kishan Deol, was a schoolteacher. In his youth, Dharmendra participated in a talent contest, and after winning, he relocated to Mumbai to pursue his dreams in Hindi film.

His debut came in 1960 with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Despite starting with a meager pay, he persisted. Over time, his raw charisma, good looks, and acting ability made him one of the most beloved and iconic actors in Bollywood. Films like Phool Aur Patthar, Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Anupama, and Mera Gaon Mera Desh cemented his place as a superstar.

Beyond his screen presence, Dharmendra also served in politics, being a Member of Parliament between 2004–2009. His contribution to Indian cinema was recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
