Sanya Malhotra was born and raised in Delhi to a middle-class Punjabi Khatri family. Her father, Sunil, worked as an engineer, while her mother, Renu, was a homemaker. She trained in Indian classical and ballet from a young age, battling childhood stammering to emerge confident onstage.
After graduating from Gargi College (Delhi University) and not advancing beyond the top 100 in Dance India Dance (2013), Sanya moved to Mumbai, doing ads and assisting in TV production until she was selected for Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal (2016)—beating over 10,000 applicants for the lead role of Babita Kumari.
